Restaurant Review: Cafe Mabel - Laurel, MT
I had the opportunity to try out a new restaurant this weekend and am excited to tell you all about it. Cafe Mabel (pronounced "Ma Bell's") is a small Mexican cafe tucked away in Laurel, Montana.
Our neighbors (who are amazing cooks themselves) have been telling us about Mabel's for months now and we finally had the chance to join them for dinner this weekend. I can honestly say it was the best authentic Mexican meal I'd ever eaten. In all honestly, I am a little upset that I hadn't heard of Mabel's earlier.
The menu has some items you would see at a traditional mexican restaurant (fajitas, chimichangas, enchiladas) however, most of the meals are truly authentic and (according to the owner) derive from various regions of Mexico. I would love to share some of the menu item names with you, but in honesty...I can't remember what they were (nor would I be able to spell / pronounce them).
When I placed my order (and I can't remember what it was) the owner sweetly said to me, "no, I wouldn't choose that for you". Then, she asked me what I like in terms of spicyness and if I liked chicken, pork...etc.) Then, she said..."I have something perfect in mind just for you".
I am not sure if what I had was on the menu (apparently they will make whatever your heart desires) She was right. it was PERFECTION! It was a cream sauce (with a little bacon), grilled chicken breasts, peppers, onions and fresh tortillas.
I really could go on, and on, and on about how much I love Mabel's Kitchen, but you really do need to try it out for yourself. The atmosphere isn't fancy but it is a warm, friendly and inviting environment you are sure to enjoy.
The prices average $10-20 per entree.
...and on a side-note, the owners (who are from Mexico) are offering cooking classes too. I don't have all of the details, but I am pretty certain I should take them! Call Mabels for more information.
