On Golden Pond
Monday, February 5, 2018 @ 7:30pm
As part of Alberta Bair Theater’s 2017-’18 First Interstate Bank Fox Series, Montana Repertory Theatre’s national tour of Ernest Thompson’s On Golden Pond is making a stop at ABT for an evening performance on Monday, February 5; a truncated version of the play will also be performed on Tuesday, February 6 at 12:30pm, as part of ABT’s Valley Federal Credit Union Student Matinee Series. You should know that long-time artistic director Greg Johnson retires in May 2019 so this is a last opportunity to see the company under his direction.
With a reputation for high quality performance and production, as well as wonderful sets, Montana Rep has become a perennial favorite of the Billings theatre audience. This year they are touring On Golden Pond, an American masterpiece in which something deep and profound resonates. Many of us are familiar with the story through the Academy Award winning film with Henry and Jane Fonda and Katherine Hepburn. While others have seen it performed on stage in one thousands of productions this play has produced over the years.
Beguilingly simple, it’s a story of a family in crisis—told in a humane, poetic, and often very funny way—that continues to resonate with audiences because we all have mothers and fathers, we all cope with aging, and we have all experienced being lost, and hopefully, found. It is this dynamic, this finding of family and the love therein, that keeps On Golden Pond forever relevant.
