Day trips: Adventure is out there!

Now that school is out for the summer, let the family adventures begin! If you're like me and my family, then you’re a big fan of the day trip. Nothing is more exhilarating than packing up your gear, hitting the road to get out into nature or just enjoying the world around us and exploring. Adventure is out there, go find it!

Below are some of the places we enjoy going within an hour or so drive of Billings.

Billings-area Day Trips: Find Your Adventure!

Absarokee area-

West Rosebud Lake-

Rosebud is a great lake you can drive up to and picnic, fish, swim or canoe.

Stillwater River-

Beehive fishing access is a great riverfront area to fish and wade. A guided rafting trip on the Stillwater is also great family fun!

Woodbine Falls-

This is an easy family friendly hike to a 280 ft. waterfall.

Don't miss: While you're over in the Absarokee area, stop by the Dew Drop In drive-in for an old fashioned milk shake or burger.

Red Lodge Area-

Cooney Reservoir-

Cooney is located off of highway 212 on the way to Red Lodge and great for boating and swimming.

Wild Bill and Greeno Lake-

Just past Red Lodge these two small lakes offer great views and family fishing.

Don't miss: While you're in Red Lodge be sure to stop by Mas Taco for some authentic Mexican eats and Scoops, an old fashioned ice cream parlor, for ice cream.

Eastern Montana Area-

Bighorn County Museum-

Take a step back in time and wander this great outdoor museum; this is not only educational but great fun!

Pompey's Pillar-

This is a great family day trip to picnic and learn some Montana History.

If you're up to more driving, the Bozeman area is not only packed with great places to hike, swim and fish but, the town itself boasts great local eats, walking paths and friendly downtown. Below are a few of our favorite places:

Lewis and Clark Caverns-

The cavern hike is about two miles and boasts amazing rock formations.

Hylite Reservoir-

Hylite is perfect for either swimming, hiking, canoeing or fishing and has stunning views of the Gallatin mountain range.

Ousel Falls-

An easy 1.6 mile hike with beautiful forest views and cascading falls.

Don't miss: if you're in Bozeman, be sure to stop by Genuine Ice Cream for locally made ice cream, The Roost for made to order fried chicken or Feed Café for brunch.
