9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at City College Campus

As Pearl Harbor forever changed America, so did September 11, 2001. It’s a day forever seared on our memories, a day that we’ll always carry with us. This Thursday, the 13th anniversary of 9/11, MSU Billings will host its annual remembrance ceremony at Montana’s 9/11 Memorial on the City College Campus at 7:45am.

It was on September 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of that devastatingly tragic day, that Montana’s 9/11 Memorial was officially dedicated at City College in Billings, MT. Since that time the monument has been visited by hundreds of people. The memorial demonstrates Montana’s commitment to remember, reflect, educate, and dedicate.

About the Memorial

The centerpiece of the memorial is a 600-pound piece of steel I-beam, a remnant of the destroyed World Trade Center. The piece arrived in Billings in May 2011 and ground was officially broken for the circular memorial area on July 15, 2011. Over the course of that summer, work was completed. The memorial now stands as a steadfast, silent witness to the memory of those who lost their lives at the hands of terrorism on that landmark day 13 years ago. It also provides a place of reflection and honor for those who serve others in all capacities. Set on a 40-foot diameter concrete pad, the 4,150 square-foot memorial features benches for personal reflection. At the center is a 12-foot diameter raised platform on which the I-beam rests. Rising above the I-beam are be two 16-foot tube steel towers, a scaled-down visual replica of the World Trade Center towers that fell on 9/11. –from the 2011 9/11 Memorial program
